Cambodia Gambling Halls

[ English ]

There is an appealing background to the Cambodia casinos that reside just across the border from neighboring Thailand, where gambling hall gaming is not allowed. Eight gambling dens are situated in a relatively small location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent location, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal capital gained from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few restrictions constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; however, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are apparently necessary to pass, there are means around this, as is true of many border crossings.

The 1st Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary bateau casino, highlights 150 slot machine games and 60 tables. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slots and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven punto banco (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and 66 of the normal table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international resort and hotel building that contains numerous conveniences aside from the gambling den, which contains 10,000 square feet of 130 one armed bandits and 88 gaming tables.
